Migraine

The first symptom of migraine usually is a headache or a “pounding and throbbing pain” which is experienced on any one side of the head. It may start as a dull ache but if left untreated, may transition to a severe level. The pain may shift from one side of the head to the other, or it could affect the front or the back or sometimes, the entire head.

Phases and Duration of Migraine

  • Prodrome: This is the first and it usually lasts a few hours to a couple of days. It is also referred to as the pre-headache or pre-monitory phase.
  • Aura: This phase may last a few minutes to an hour. Some people don’t experience the aura phase at all, and some experience the aura and the headache at the same time.
  • Headache: This is known to be the worst phase. It may last from four to seventy-two hours and is regarded as a loss of man-days or unproductive days.
  • Postdrome: The phase may last a day or two. It is also referred to as a migraine hangover. Most people who experience migraine, experience the postdrome too.
