Breathing easier Holistically

Mar 23 2021

Asthma is an inflammatory disease prevalent throughout the world. Asthmatics tend to describe Asthma attacks as “trying to breathe through water”. Symptoms for Asthma are as varied as what could trigger an episode. There are an estimated 23.4 million people in the world affected by Asthma. That translates to about 5-10% of the world population.  This includes about 7 million children that are affected by this deadly breathing disorder.

Conventional Vs. Holistic Viewpoints in treatment of Asthma

Conventional practitioners of medicine recognize several factors that lead to a diagnosis of Asthma.  Family history, faulty response to intense exercise, environmental triggers, frequent upper respiratory tract infections are some key factors leading to an Asthma diagnosis.  Conventional medicine largely focuses on managing symptoms and curtailing acute attacks. A steroid treatment – while the best course of treatment during an emergency – has side effects such as weight gain, disrupted endocrine and metabolic functions and decreased immunity.

Holistic physicians like to consider all factors that conventional medicine accounts for – however, they dig deeper to identify potential root causes as well.

These may include:

  • Food sensitivities
  • Environmental irritants at home/school/work
  • Poor eating habits
  • Nutrient deficiencies and/or absorption issues
  • Stress and emotional well being
  • Digestive functions
  • Use of prescription antibiotics

A holistic physician such as an Ayurvedic or Homeopathic physician, would look at how conventional therapies may have suppressed the immune system that may have resulted in Asthma. A holistic physician would never ask an asthmatic to stop use of an inhaler while embarking on a holistic journey. The use would be reduced though, to help the body cope and then brought down based on the body’s response.

From the standpoint of natural medicine, most symptoms of Asthma can be resolved by changes in lifestyle and treatments that address the factors that have affected good health and living. A trained holistic physician would identify the root cause of Asthma and implement a treatment plan.  Depending on the age and the severity of symptoms, treatment plans may include but not be restricted to:

  • Nutritional supplements that help reduce inflammations – such as Vitamin C, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, probiotics that help in gut health and Zinc that helps cope with stress and build up immunity.
  • Customize herbal remedies that are trigger specific and symptom specific.
  • Make dietary adjustments to remove irritants and allergens present in food.
  • Enrich the diet with nutrients that support and improve respiratory health.
  • Practice management of stress through Yoga, deep breathing and other techniques.
  • A qualified physician would also help you choose an appropriate style of exercise to manage intensity and avoid triggers for an asthmatic attack.

How you can help yourself

Improve your diet to include nutrient rich foods. Whole grains, plenty of colorful vegetables and nutrient dense foods work wonders on the immune system and on your respiratory health. Avoid milk and dairy products and drink plenty of fresh water. Practising deep breathing will help train your respiratory muscles and improve the quality of your breathing. Using air filters at home and at work and replacing them or having them cleaned every couple of months will help to a large extent. Avoid sleeping below or adjacent to ventilation panels. Avoid being around smoke and smokers and use face protection when or if you are using cleaning supplies.  Try and introduce greater amounts of garlic, ginger, honey into your diet. Garlic is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help alleviate symptoms. Honey helps soothe the throat and reduce coughing, while ginger has also been shown to improve asthmatic symptoms. Strangely enough, some studies have shown that caffeine is a bronchodilator and can reduce muscle fatigue. But – holistic medicine does not entirely approve of caffeine usage – except in very minimal quantities.
