The magical Ayurvedic diet

Feb 19 2021

Is there a magical diet that we can follow to be fit, slim and energetic? Alas, there isn’t a single universal diet that is good for everyone. But there are some common principles we can use to suit your body type. When I say body type, I am referring to the whole of what your body constitutes – physical, mental, and emotional.

Dosha and you!

Dosha can be described as the unique mind-body constitution that helps us understand the heightened elements in your body and find a balance in them. Your doshic imbalance can be a combination of several factors like your Vata (air and space elements), Pitta (fire and water elements) and Kapha (Earth and water elements). This means you can change how your body functions based on the different factors you need to balance.

Vata dosha

Excess Vata energy can be dealt with by having foods that would balance it. You can restore balance by consuming enough warm foods – like having food in a slightly higher than room temperature and with enough spices; foods that are hydrating – like stews, soups; foods that are full of healthy fats – like organic fresh cream, avocados, ghee or olive oil; foods that give you comfort and are thick and dense, yet healthy.

Kapha dosha

In cases of Kapha dosha, where Earth and Water elements play an essential role, you can try food that is light, dry and warm – popcorn, beans, foods with fibrous material like leafy vegetables that aid the passage of food, and waste products through the gut. Doing this would restore your Kapha balance.

Pitta Dosha

Handling Pitta dosha is another challenge as you would have to manage fire and water elements that tend to have sharp, strong qualities like oily and hotness. Eating food that cools your body can be beneficial. You should shift to vegetables that help you cool down, like cucumber, parsley, peppermint. You may move to astringents like green tea, pomegranate which would help in minimising your Pitta imbalance.
